WELLNESS

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.

Everyone in fact has a mental health and it may be influenced by biological factors like genes, family history, and experiences one has in life. Unfortunately, 1 in 5 adults in the United States experience a mental health illness according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI).

Reach Out, Care, Know (ROCK) at Gunn High School in Palo Alto, California has recognized this pertinent issue which has become immensely prevalent amongst teenagers. We work to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health through education, outreach, and events and remind our peers the importance of valuing one's wellness. Additionally, students participate in trainings, so they know how to be a "ROCK" -- someone who is able to approach a friend who may be battling a mental health issue, provide support, and connect them to the help they need and deserve.
